This set contains Gray Stain and Mineral.
Gray Stain is a stain that can occur due to two primary reasons:
1. The most common reason: trees that are harvested out of season while they are sapping causing the tree to have excessive sap and minerals. If a tree that was harvested out of season is not properly and quickly dried it will produce gray stain or an overall silver-ish gray color.
2. Wood can also produce gray stain if stack and stored for long periods of time exposed to oxygen and sunlight. This is more prevalent in Maples like Big Leaf Maple where on average more out of season wood is harvested than winter harvest wood. The main cause for this is due to where Big Leaf Maple is located some areas for an example the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. In some areas, they can see upwards of 150 days a year of rain which the rainy season directly relates to the winter harvest season. It can be impossible to get heavy equipment in an out of the woods this time of year.
Mineral Streaks are caused both naturally and unnaturally. Natural mineral streaks are caused by excessive mineral deposits or groupings in an area of the tree. Unnatural mineral streaks are caused by a boring insect which intentionally bores into the tree with the purpose of eating or feeding on the trees nutrients and by doing so the bored or tunnel portion semi-rots along with insect excrement causing a visible mark dramatically different in color.
